Christmas and Whirly Pop
We'll be home for Christmas this year! Nate's parents arrive from Russia on Wed. night. Ruthie arrives some time Thursday. Grandma is spending Saturday and that night with us for a pre-Christmas celebration before she flies to VA on Sunday. The day after Christmas, Mom, Fath and Ruthie drive down to DC for Hobbes' wedding!!! We leave on the 27th to drop the girls off at my parents' house. We're leaving them for the first time overnight ever. Two nights and two days. I don't know how it will go... It can be pretty hard to read Anna, but also pretty easy to entertain her too. I'm a bit nervous!
Anyway, I had to tell you about the Whirley Pop popcorn maker. Have you heard of it Kris? You're a fan of popcorn so you must have some method that you like besides the bag type. Our present to our family this year is the Whirley Pop. I laughed when I first saw the name but it is seriously good popcorn! Just about every night at 9:00 Nate and I look at each other with mischievous smiles and say "Whirley Pop?" Simple pleasures!
We got a load of snow too, though not as much as NY it sounds. Nate will have to tell you about his snow blower trials. He keeps breaking it and fixing it. Luckily it's still a joy and a challenge. It's been pretty cold here too. It was -.4 this morning. At noon now it's 23 degrees. We get some sledding and snow man building in now and then. It is fun!
Hey, one more note: Anna stood up by herself yesterday from the floor! She was close to doing it a while ago but she went through a big growth spurt that made it harder to get herself up. It was one of those things that she decided to do herself. She goes from sit to kneel beside a chair or bed, then to stand. Amazing!

Hey! Best wishes on Hobbes wedding! How incredibly exciting. I'm so glad that you will all be together to celebrate TWICE next week.
Thanks on the Whirley Pop. I just might have to ask for one for my birthday. I'm currently using the air popper I got as a Chrismas gift in 1983, and it's not doing so well. Each time I use it, I expect it to go up in flames.
I still feel bad about destroying your wok, Karen. Prior to Hunny House, I'd never had teflon stuff (I still use nothing but cast iron), and had no idea that popcorn kernals would scratch it. None at all. I felt so stupid when you guys told me!
ok so I had not a clue to what the heck a whirly pop is. And I LOVE popcorn So I did my homework. You know what's even easier than that? this popper by westbend: http://tinyurl.com/2gokkb
I don't really care for microwave popcorn. My favorite is made by a friend of mine the old fashioned way in a heavy pot with oil and a lid. My next favorite way is using the popper I listed above. Not as good as the pot and oil but next to it. Hope you all are well.
MERRY CHRISTMAS!
We have a version of the Whirley Pop. It is great. We found that adding a little sugar to the oil as well makes a pretty close version of the famous Kettle Korn sold at nearly every summer festival here. We've been known to stand in line for 1/2 hour for that stuff!! Mmmm.
Oh, all of this popcorn talk makes me hungry! We've been having it every night lately. Growing up, we ate it every Sunday for dinner with milkshakes. We made it with (and still do) the Stir Crazy popper. Yum yum!!!
Congrats to Anna for her achievement!
Karen, I'm sure the girls will do fine with your parents. Everything will be so new to them, since they don't live there they'll be fine.
We just finished watching the Nativity movie with Caleb and Emily. Wow! What a powerful movie.
Good job standing Anna! Stay warm up there.
MERRY CHRISTMAS!
Oh Kris, I had forgotten about the wok. We have a much better wok now! Erase that from your memory! Heather, we did try the kettle corn recipe and it is yummy! Merry Christmas to you all!
