It's getting chilly!
Hello Friends! It's getting chilly over here. I know Texas is probably "hot" by our standards but is it at least cooling off for you? I'm sure Rochester and Buffalo are cool and cloudy. Today Jane and I are cooking up a pumpkin we grew to make into a pumpkin pie. I was afraid she wouldn't let me cook it. She's made a little pumpkin shrine in the living room using wood blocks on a hearth Nate made for the wood stove. The chimney for the stove is to be installed tomorrow! I'm a bit nervous about having someone put a hole in the roof! But, I keep encouraging myself with the contemplation of the "Smore Factor". In other words, I tell myself "If you want smores you have to let them put a hole in the roof."

That message is from Jane. Perhaps your kiddos can understand it!
Nate's work is going ok for now. The station is pretty busy with awards programs and he is editing all this week and next. He has heard of more lay offs coming in January. Meanwhile he has a big job with East Light doing a home improvement kind of show for a contractor in South Portland. It's stressful but very good income for the time being. It's a bit of a balancing act as far as loyalties. How much time does he take from Chanel 6 to work on the project, etc. The show airs on Chanel 6 tomorrow morning.
Let me put in some encouragement for you moms (Sabrina and Kristen) who have not yet experienced pre-school. It does seem expensive, until the first two and a half hours of freedom you've had in years! I now believe it's worth every penny to have both girls at school learning and interacting while I run errands, clean up or just read. The peace and sanity I've regained is unbelievable. Something for you to look forward to!

Oh, I LOVE our Mother's Day Out/Preschool program! I agree with you Karen! I got caleb in a mother's day out program when he was 18 months. I know it sounds early, but when you have no family or baby sitters and your child is with you twenty-four seven and doesn't go with anyone else except you or your husband. You know you're in trouble and need to get some one else involved. The teachers at those places are so wonderful and loving with the kids. It's amazing! They would always have to hold caleb while I left because he wouldn't want me to go. When I would peak back in two or three minutes later, he was fine! the little stinker! Caleb never did like preschool and he never wanted to stay, but I'm so thankful that I never had that problem with him in Kindergarten. He always liked "regular" school.
I agree with you Karen. Preschool ROCKS! I'm so glad you're able to have some "you" time. Go for a good walk for me. Unfortunately it is still in the low nineties down here. Although, I know this will sound weird. But there is a noticeable difference between a suffocating 93 degrees in the Spring/Summer and a 93 degrees in the Fall. It's not quite as oppressive. Sounds weird I know. But it's true. Send some of that cold weather down here please.
Thanks for writing.
Love you all!

Funny, I was thinking of you the other day- I was COLD! and thinking, "Gee, Karen would probably be enjoying this." Later on, I noticed your new post.
Whatever it is that I'm allergic to during fall is apparently out in full force. I'm having a hard time getting Noah out as much as I'd like, as it hurts me. I've been really lucky- my dad has taken Noah out a bit the last few days, and so has John, when he gets home from work. Mom's group and an open-gymnastics program open this week, so we'll have good times there, I hope. (Although I have to admit I'm not looking forward to other moms.)
I'm with you on the personal space issue . . . I get lots, but I still crave more. I'll write more on that later.
Hi guys. The thought of starting preschool is both super-exciting and super-scary for me! The exciting part is the structure, socialization, etc. - I can see from the boys' reactions to Sunday School last week that they are going to LOVE preschool next year. The scary part is the food allergies - the fear that an aide or teacher will accidentally give them an "unapproved snack," and my poor unsuspecting boys will obediently eat it and end up in the hospital. So it's a mixed bag around here. There's a preschool near us that's supposed to be one of the better ones for handling food allergies, so that's the one we're looking at - despite its higher cost. Guess it's worth it for the peace of mind, right?
Anyway . . . I can't wait for some time during the day sans boys - I think that will be very useful toward my attempts at living a balanced life! (Let's just say that babysitters are very rare in this house!) We're just enjoying watching the boys grow into the threes, now. Fun to see how they change, isn't it?
Okay, off to laundry etc . . .
Hey, Sabrina. I understand with the food allergies. A friend of ours has a son with a similar situation. All I can say is start teaching the boys at their level that there are foods they can't have. That's what my friend did and you would be shocked at how well he did. If he noticed some one was close to him and had a certain food he wasn't sure of or knew he shouldn't have he would raise his hand and tell the teacher. Maybe you could show them some foods that are popular amongst kids that they shouldn't be exposed to and teach them how to tell some one. Or Have you or david dress up and tell them you are the teacher and if you show them something they shouldn't have how to respond. I swear it is amazing how smart even the littlest ones can be. They get things we would never think of. Honestly my friends child was so amazing at telling his teachers even when he was in the three/four year old class. The teachers will also make sure the kids know there is to be no sharing of food. Ever since caleb was in at two years it's pretty standard for the teachers to make sure the kids know NO SHARING your food. Also the teachers just might have you pack their snacks yourself so there won't be a problem. I wouldn't worry, the teachers are SO AWARE of allergies and are SO educated about them now a days it's a regular thing for them to be super careful with the little ones. they'll probably make you give them two epi pins too with the kids allergies being so bad. The teachers in caleb's class would even bring the epi pin outside with them with this certain child. I hope I helped and didn't make you more nervous. Honestly the teachers are great with allergies.
Don't worry they'll be fine. And you'll have some "down" time. :)
Thanks, Jenn - it's always great to hear about food-allergy success stories! :)
