Dinner for One

John and I were looking back on our time in Denmark today. New Year's Eve is a big deal over there. Everyone (and I mean everyone) buys fireworks, and at midnight the whole city erupts. After fifteen or twenty minutes it's almost hard to see for all the smoke. It always seemed a miracle that the city still stood the next day.

Before the big midnight boom, there are other traditions. The Queen comes on the television about 11:30 or so to give her annual national address. Directly afterwards, Dinner for One is broadcast, every year, without fail. Everyone watches. Did they do that in England, Nate?

You can read about Dinner for one on Wikipedia here, or view it for yourself here. (Click on the top box, "Video, Dinner for One." It's in English.)

It's been a long day

First, and aside with photos. Apparently I can only post them at the top of a post, unless perhaps I go code them into html. Here is Noah going sledding outside the house. (Which is much better than inside the house.)

I've had a lousy day. I woke up with a migraine. It's from sinuses, that I know, and I did my best to prevent it. (Lots of water, sudafed and guiafesen last night, even a dose of tylenol) I woke up with it this morning at 6 am, and threw up until 1 pm. The second dose of fiorocet (better known at the Loopy Drug) seems to have knocked it out. I still have a headache, but it's on it's way out. I'd quote Dick Cheny here, but I really dislike him so much I can't even do it in jest on a blog.

Anyhoo, I'm still breastfeeding, which is why I couldn't just take my rescue drug (generally Imitrex, sometimes Relpax, which is similar). I guess in a sad way it's good for me to grit my teeth through these, as it proves to myself that I can do it, and it's been so long since I've had to I've kinda forgotten I could. Of course, that entirely depends on having someone to care for Noah. Today would have been a nightmare without John. Noah loves toilets. Having me heaving into one it highly novel to him, and it's hard to keep him from getting into trouble while I'm otherwise indisposed. It's better he's with someone else.

I never thought I'd breastfeed past Noah's birthday. I'm fine with other people doing it (unless they have to go to pre-school with their child for snack time), but I've never thought it was for me. We're down to three times a day. Once in the morning, and before each nap. That was a terrible habit to get into, and the main reason we're still doing it.

I know Noah doesn't need it. He did fine today with his dad, with no nursing at all. That's because he didn't have a choice, and he knew it, and he managed. When it's just me, him, and an upcoming nap, he wants me, and inside out little vacumn, it's hard to pull the plug on it, to be honest. Although I think that's coming in the next few weeks.

Anyhoo, now that I've overshared with you, I'll progress to Christmas. It was lovely. We spent the weekend before Christmas in Watertown, and Christmas Eve and Day at home. It was busy without being crazy. Very, very nice.

Noah was totally into opening presents. Noah cleaned up at both grandparents. (Actually, so did his parents.) He came away from the holiday with no less than three riding toys and a Radio Flyer, which are the perfect gifts for him, since he is constantly in motion. He also got a toy for his roll around blocks, which gives him something to do with an old toy. Thankfully, we also received some clothes, to it wasn't too overwhelming for him. Santa gave him a big set of blocks and giant stacker cubes. Christmas is way more fun with Noah around.

Hope everyone else's Christmas was cozy. Karen and Nate, I'll want the full story on Hobbe's wedding!!! (Thanks to you I actually dreamed about getting a Whirley Pop. Glad to hear you have a new wok.)

Christmas meets Flashdance

Both kids are through with their Christmas parties, done with school, and now it's onward to the big day tomorrow. Here's a picture of Emily at her Christmas performance earlier this week. While singing, she broke into dance with arms flowing with near-choreographed precision. Here's a snapshot of her performance.

Merry Christmas to all!

Christmas and Whirly Pop

We'll be home for Christmas this year! Nate's parents arrive from Russia on Wed. night. Ruthie arrives some time Thursday. Grandma is spending Saturday and that night with us for a pre-Christmas celebration before she flies to VA on Sunday. The day after Christmas, Mom, Fath and Ruthie drive down to DC for Hobbes' wedding!!! We leave on the 27th to drop the girls off at my parents' house. We're leaving them for the first time overnight ever. Two nights and two days. I don't know how it will go... It can be pretty hard to read Anna, but also pretty easy to entertain her too. I'm a bit nervous!

Anyway, I had to tell you about the Whirley Pop popcorn maker. Have you heard of it Kris? You're a fan of popcorn so you must have some method that you like besides the bag type. Our present to our family this year is the Whirley Pop. I laughed when I first saw the name but it is seriously good popcorn! Just about every night at 9:00 Nate and I look at each other with mischievous smiles and say "Whirley Pop?" Simple pleasures!

We got a load of snow too, though not as much as NY it sounds. Nate will have to tell you about his snow blower trials. He keeps breaking it and fixing it. Luckily it's still a joy and a challenge. It's been pretty cold here too. It was -.4 this morning. At noon now it's 23 degrees. We get some sledding and snow man building in now and then. It is fun!

Hey, one more note: Anna stood up by herself yesterday from the floor! She was close to doing it a while ago but she went through a big growth spurt that made it harder to get herself up. It was one of those things that she decided to do herself. She goes from sit to kneel beside a chair or bed, then to stand. Amazing!

Oh the weather outside...

Oh the weather outside is rainy
But I shouldn't be so complainy.
'Cause I know how Upstate winters go
You've got snow, you've got snow, it might blow.

Seriously, we've got rain. At least you have something to show for December.

What's everyone doing for Christmas? We're sticking 'round here. Jenn's folks are in town. We had Caleb's birthday party today, and he turns 6 on the 20th. Can hardly believe it. He opened his party gifts tonight, and he said things like "awesome!" and "dude!" and "way cool!". Wha?

Stay safe up yonder! Make a snowball for me.
